The Lower East Side has long been a food Mecca for New Yorkers and world travelers alike. Although food trucks and sleek, inventive kitchens have replaced the pushcarts of yesteryears, the neighborhood remains steeped in many culinary traditions.
In the midst of all the deliciousness, it’s easy to forget that many people in the neighborhood are worrying about how to afford fresh, healthy food for their families.
What is Food Insecurity?
Food insecurity is when people don’t have access to affordable, nutritious and sufficient food – and in NYC, it’s often because their neighborhood doesn’t afford them the right opportunities to get it.
What We’re Doing About It
Good food is a part of every program we offer, whether its a healthy breakfast, afterschool snack, or celebration full of favorite dishes.
Our senior center offers breakfast and lunch throughout the week, early childhood classrooms provide healthy snacks and meals, and our afterschool programs get dinner on the table for hundreds of kids at our community centers.
We also connect hundreds of people to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food stamps to .
